From Garages To Greatness

During our recent tour of Friends of Disabled Adults and Children (FODAC) with board members and peer mentors of United Spinal Association of Georgia, I was profoundly moved by the dedication and impact this organization has on the community. FODAC is a beacon of hope and support for individuals with disabilities, providing essential home medical equipment (HME) and services that significantly improve the quality of life for those in need. Their commitment is not just about lending a helping hand; it's about transforming lives, fostering independence, and ensuring that every individual has the opportunity to live with dignity and comfort.

FODAC began over 37 years ago in a garage, where the founders repaired and re-issued used wheelchairs to those isolated by lack of mobility. Today, it has evolved into a 65,000 sq. ft facility, providing more than 8,000 HME items annually. The organization has repaired and reissued over 50,000 wheelchairs, along with tens of thousands of other items like hospital beds, bath aids, walkers, and scooters, all aimed at enhancing mobility and independence for people with disabilities.  They also keep 450 tons of waste per year out our landfills.

For a nominal fee, individuals can access refurbished items that grant them mobility, comfort, and a semblance of independence they might have thought lost.  They also repair client-owned equipment, install donated lifts into private vehicles, work with local, state, and federal agencies to provide medical equipment in domestic disasters and have sent items to 82 counties to date!  They provide refurbished computers and even have low interest loans and resources to obtain assistive technology.

Volunteers and donations are the lifeblood of FODAC, enabling it to continue its mission. The organization depends on a wide network of volunteers for various programs, from refurbishing wheelchairs to staffing their Thrift Store. Their efforts not only make a significant difference in the lives of individuals with disabilities but also create a sense of community and shared purpose.

For those looking to contribute, support, or are in need of assistance, FODAC welcomes all to join their mission in keeping people moving and enhancing the lives of individuals with disabilities across the nation.
